Light the Night: Saturday, September 24th 2005
Coordinator: Amy Chen & Diana Wang
The effort of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to raise awareness of blood cancers and raise money for cures was materialized, on Saturday September 24th, 2005 on the Cook and Douglass Campuses. Every year, Rutgers
University helps in hosting Light the Night, an evening Walk, in which walkers carry illuminated balloons. Those carrying white balloons were survivors and those who wanted to show their support carried red ones.
The sisters of Kappa Phi Lambda arrived at the Douglass Student Center at 2 PM, five hours before the walk started to help in the preparation. Their assistance ranged from helping to register walkers, carrying and sorting the material, decorating the student center with streamers and balloons, and were also placed in charge of arranging and hanging up an endless supply of banners and signs.
The girls who volunteered that day had not planned to walk, thinking that helping in set up would be exhausting enough. At the end of the day, however, they surprised themselves and the directors of the event by participating in the walk, each holding a red balloon in their hand, illuminating the night sky.
“The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is a relentless organization,” said Director Erica DelCore, “and Kappa Phi Lambda was a part of this effort.”
